MOT Test Centre

When should I get an MOT?

An MOT test is usually carried out annually. The exception is if your car is brand new, then it won’t need one in the first three years. It is a test required by law to check that your vehicle meets the national road safety and environmental standards.

You will need to book an MOT for your vehicle when:

• It has been registered for three years
• A year has passed since the vehicle's last MOT if it is over three years old

If you have an ambulance, taxi or private passenger vehicle with more than 8 seats, then it will require an MOT test when it is one year old.

It is illegal to drive without a valid MOT, and a fine of up to £1,000 can be given out if you are caught driving without a valid MOT. 

When is the earliest I can get an MOT?

You are able to book your car or van in for a new MOT test up to a month (minus a day) before the date your current MOT is valid until. This date is printed out on your current MOT test certificate. Doing the test earlier than your current renewal date does not affect the renewal date for the next year’s certificate.

My MOT has run out, what can I do?

Don’t panic. Get your car booked with us today. Do not drive your vehicle if its MOT has expired, you can be prosecuted if caught. The exceptions to driving your car are:

• Driving it to or from somewhere to be repaired
• Driving to a pre-arranged MOT test centre
